“Torupööre” (“Pipeformation”) is a hypothesis concerning a city with a closed material cycle, where all material for the new city must be sourced from the existing city. The installation examines pipe fencing as a potential new urban space and studies ways of turning a structure that intrinsically creates interruption into a structure that supports something. It is a dream of a city where the meaning of pipe fencing is something other than what is now.
The installation is located in an area with ill-defined use and value next to Tallinn’s central station, in a densely trafficked pedestrian-only space. In this way, the installation gives substance to the city’s hidden corners, drawing attention to untapped potential and giving room for the imagination. The existing situation on the fringes becomes a colonnade that can be walked through, a kind of public square where the vacant area in the middle offers a change of pace, and a palace for a stage or exhibition.
The lattice-liked pipe structure is unfinished and refers to construction, temporariness and functionality. It is both symbolic and real infrastructure. “Torupööre“ invites people to look for a use for itself, a participatory experience, physical and metaphysical interpretation; it leads the viewer to see the urban space as living material. What are the city’s boundaries, densities and alternatives? How to reconceptualise public space?
”Torupööre“ consists of 646 metres of pipe fencing gathered in Tallinn in summer 2021. The goal of the project – to intervene creatively into resource use and organization of urban space in Tallinn – was only half realized: the pipes removed from the city have now been replaced by new pipe fencing.
