The general education system in Estonia is undergoing major curriculum reforms and school network reorganisation. The Estonian Association of Architects is interested in creating better learning environments for the next generations. For the given purpose, we cooperate with the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research in the basic school network reorganisation programme by offering advice to local governments and schools on spatial issues.
On the other hand, we have also made recommendations to introduce architectural studies in basic education. It includes the organisation of spatial studies simultaneously on various levels: single tasks can be creatively integrated into different subjects while also a pilot project of the elective subject of architecture has been launched on the secondary school level with teacher training conducted by architects.
Spatial thinking is an inborn quality of every person. If the given skill is not developed further, one’s sensitivity to space as well as the general quality of life will decrease. It is important that every person has the chance to learn how to notice space, how to get to know and appreciate it better and this way improve their daily living environment.
The Estonian national curriculum provides that the learning environment is the combination of social, mental and physical environment. It is neither reasonable nor possible to separate parts from the whole. Designing a school building requires a well-considered comprehensive vision on behalf of the client as well as the architect.
A good school building starts from a good brief. This is where we can provide professional assistance – in drawing up a spatial analysis, adjusting the room programme and formulating the brief.
