Architectural excursion In Tallinn and on to Saaremaa

6 pm – 7 pm Louis I. Kahn Exhibition opening, Kuressaare Castle

The exhibition has been put together by the Pennsylvania University Architectural Archives to celebrate the 100th birthday of Louis Kahn. A selection from this exhibition will be coming to Estonia. The exhibition in Estonia will be designed by Peeter Laurits. The exhibition is open for viewing from 6 October until 30 November 2006.

8 pm – 11 pm Film "My Architect. A Son's Journey" (2003) – presented by the director,
Nathaniel Kahn, Kuressaare Linnateater

N. Kahn's two-hour documentary film about his father has received a number of important festival awards (e.g. a Golden Hugo and the Audience's Choice Award at the Chicago Film Festival). Louis Kahn's childhood home, Saaremaa, is also mentioned in the film. See also www.myarchitectfilm.com

Saturday 7 October

10 am – 6 pm Conference, Kuressaare Linnateater

Main speakers: Robert McCarter, Anne Tyng, Thomas Leslie, Vilen Künnapu
The main aim of the conference is to demonstrate the vitality and relevance of Kahn's ideas today, what they have contributed to contemporary architecture and how this is interpreted today. Other topics that will be addressed include: Louis Kahn's cooperation with Estonian engineer, August Komendant, a working relationship that enabled Kahn to realize his large scale designs; we will endeavor to find out more about Kahn's family life before emigrating to the USA (including their connection with Estonia).
Simultaneous interpretation (English – Estonian – English) will be available at the conference.
