Press Release: The Nominees for the Association of Estonian Architects Annual Prize and its Small Site Award

19.09.2016

There are four nominees this year for the Association of Estonian Architects (EAL) Annual Prize: the beach house at Narva Joaorg together with the recreation area around it, the Kohtla mine park, Pärnu’s beach stadium building, and Viljandi’s crematorium-ceremonial hall. AS Merko Construction supports the awarding of the Annual Prize. Today, the EAL also announced five nominees for its Small Site Award. The best of these nominees will be announced on 9 December at the architecture awards ceremony that will be held at NO99 Theatre.

“While architects were still rather restrained in submitting their work in the first year, the picture this year was already much more pleasing,” said the President of the Association of Estonian Architects Katrin Koov. “Eight entries in total were submitted for the Annual Prize, from which four nominees were selected for the final round. Fifteen entries were received for the Small Site Award, from which the jury selected the five strongest entries.”

According to Katrin Koov, the level of quality of the nominees is very high in both categories, comparable to any international architectural competition. “What is pleasing is that the bold and distinctive approach of each team to complex tasks is clearly brought out in these entries. The recognition of fresh ideas, after all, is the broader objective of such competitions,” noted Koov.

The EAL has awarded its Annual Prize since 2015. An independent expert in architecture invited from abroad decides who receives the title of laureate. The renowned Spanish architect Fuensanta Nieto will make the decision this year. Her architectural bureau, Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, has incidentally also won the architectural competition for the Arvo Pärt Centre, for instance. The amount of the Annual Prize that is awarded in cooperation with Merko Construction is 5000 euros.

Small architectural forms, structures of small size, and landscape sites participate in the EAL small site competition. The amount of the award fund is 4000 euros and the Estonian Cultural Endowment supports its awarding. The members of the jury for the 2016 Small Site Competition are: Vesa Humalisto (SAFA), Ivar Lubjak (EAL), Aet Ader (EAL), Edgar Kaare (EMAL) and Ilona Gurjanova (EDL).
