Press release: The Union of Estonian Architects and Estonian Academy of Arts introduced the newly founded Estonian Centre of Architecture in the City Hall of Ta

08.10.2008

The new organisation focuses upon contemporary architecture and its future. The mission of the Estonian Centre of Architecture (Eesti Arhitektuurikeskus  - EAK) is to promote Estonian architecture and urban construction, to raise the awareness about architecture and to collect, exchange, mediate and distribute architectural data both home and abroad. EAK aims at integration of knowledge and competence of architecture with other areas of society, contributing to the development and innovation of areas related to architecture.

According to Signe Kivi, Rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts (EAA), the keywords of this millennium are creativity, innovation, economy and sustainability. „If these words do not take on a real and feasible meaning or are not paid attention to, there will be no next millennium inasmuch as time is just a human measure“

The founders of EAK set out to transcend borders in social as well cultural terms in order to reach different audiences by operating on various levels: that of individuals, associations as well as on the state, regional, national and global level. The centre of architecture will evolve into one of the executive institutions of architectural policy in Estonia.

Ike Volkov, Chairman of the Union of Estonian Architects (UEA), says that the activities of UEA over the recent years as an advocate of public interests and a high-quality environment have become extremely multifaceted. „An artistic association operating out of free will neither manages nor is able to address all the facets of architecture in Estonia. Creation of the Estonian Centre of Architecture has been discussed for years and people have come up with various visions. By now we have reached the stage of action, yet we acknowledge that there is a lot of work to do and we are still at the very beginning.”

EAK wants to pursue an active and productive cooperation with other similar centres worldwide, with the city of Tallinn (as the cultural capital of 2011), various Ministries as well as private entrepreneurs and municipalities in order to synthesize information and various aspirations with regard to interpretation and creation of our public space.

The Council of EAK consists of Inga Raukas (Deputy Chairman of UEA) and Jüri Soolep (Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of EAA). Ülar Mark, member and Chairman of the Chair of UEA in 2006-2007, is the member of the Management Board. A competition for the managing director of EAK will be announced in the near future.
