New architectural solution sought for historical Narva fortress area
On 25 March, the Narva Museum Foundation and the Estonian Association of Architects announced an architecture competition to produce the best solution to the renovation of the buildings and grounds of Narva fortress. The main objective is to shape the area into a site with a modern museum, conference centre and venue for public events, capable of serving as a prestigious site on the national level as well as preserving and protecting the historical legacy of the region. The winning entries will be determined in July 2015.
“We want the new construction layers to be developed to be a respectable addition to the Narva fortress with its 700-year-long history,” said Narva Museum Foundation director Andres Toode. “We are looking for clearly distinctive, high-quality solutions that would harmonize with the existing architecture. The aim of the competition is to make full use of the fortress as an open and visitor-friendly heritage and experiential environment.”
The competition conditions envision a large part of the fortress setting, which has developed over the long history of the citadel and many construction and renovation stages, being preserved in the current form. The competition seeks solutions above all for the following features:
• Renovation of the east wing, interior courtyard and public areas of the convent building
• Addition to the stone hall and new bridge to Narva Old Town (new structures)
• Renovation of the western courtyard and Kristervall bastion
The deadline for submitting qualification documents is 29 April 2015 at 16:00. Competition entries may be submitted until 15 June. The best conceptual designs will be announced in early July 2015. Prizes for the winners total 52,000 euros, which will be divided as follows:
• 20,000 euros for the best conceptual solution
• 15,000 euros for second place
• 10,000 euros for third place
• 3500 euros as an incentive prize
Competition language is Estonian language. The detailed rules can be downloaded from the public procurements registry www.riigihanked.riik.ee. The competition’s reference number is 158469.
